Self Reflective Portraits with Vickisa
I have created an encompassing lesson that works for many ages but is specifically thrust for eighth graders. It is perfect as a rite of passage before they are going into high school.
The lesson is called A Self Reflective Portrait because the students really examine themselves literally using a mirror. Art, the work of Frida Kahlo and writing are also incorporated. A cultural and art history component are embedded in the lesson. The feedback component offers an oral language/vocabulary experience newcomers can participate in.
After three sequential lessons the students have created a self-portrait in Frida Kahlo style framed in a Mexican folk art tin frame that can be hung during and before a graduation celebration. The students do a writing project with their teacher or Poets in the Schools. I will suggest topics. The students emerge with a sense of empowerment, achievement and self searching especially the girls and minorities.
I am committed to bringing this project to as many schools as possible. I feel so passionate about this because I know it works and I have observed how proud the students are of their finished work and how much all students enjoy looking at them.
